Abstract
This study investigated the feasibility of using spent fluid catalytic cracking catalyst (FCC) to adsorb hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution. Batch studies were conducted to ascertain the optimum conditions required for the adsorption process. The study revealed that maximum adsorption of Cr (VI) was achieved at a pH of 4. The contact time and adsorbent dosage for optimum performance were 20 minutes and 2 g respectively. The kinetic modeling of the time bound experiments showed that pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted the process better than its pseudo-first-order counterpart. The thermodynamic parameters evaluated for the process revealed that the process was exothermic and spontaneous. Therefore, spent FCC can be applied as a low cost adsorbent for the adsorption of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution.
